Privacy policy
Effective October 29, 2026
Here & Then is run by Beck's IT Consulting ("we"). This page explains what the app collects, why, who can see it, and how to delete it. In short: we collect only what the app needs to work, we don't track you, and we never sell anything about you.
Your location
- The app uses your precise location only while it's open, to show which landmark you're at, open its wall and collect passport stamps. It never uses location in the background.
- When you open, post to, like or comment on a wall, the app sends your current position to our server so it can check you're inside that landmark's area. The server uses it for that check and doesn't save it: it isn't stored with your posts, your account or our logs.
- Your passport stamps and the history of where you've been stay on your phone. We never receive them. Deleting the app deletes them.
Your account
- Email address. You sign in with a code we email you; there's no password. We use your email only to send those codes, and to decide whether you get the Penn State badge (addresses ending in psu.edu). It's never shown to other people.
- Profile. Your first name, last initial, role (student, alum, parent or visitor) and class year, if you give one. Other people see these next to your posts, as in "Maya R."
- Sign-in records. When you ask for a code, we keep it in scrambled form with your network (IP) address for two days, to stop people guessing codes or flooding inboxes. Your phone keeps a sign-in key for up to 180 days so you don't have to sign in again.
What you post
- Your posts, photos, comments and likes, and which landmark each is on. They're visible to people standing at that landmark, and your own posts are visible to you anywhere.
- Before a photo leaves your phone, the app shrinks it and removes its hidden details, such as where it was taken, the camera and the date.
- Reports and blocks you make, so we can review reported posts and keep blocked people's posts out of your view.
Server logs
Our server records each request it receives (the time, which page of the server was asked for, and the network address) to keep the service running and secure. These logs are deleted after 30 days.
What we don't do
- No advertising, analytics or tracking tools, and no tracking across other apps or websites.
- We don't sell or rent your information, or share it for marketing.
Who handles your data for us
- DigitalOcean hosts our server, database and photo storage, in the United States.
- Postmark delivers the sign-in code emails.
- Apple distributes the app. Apple may share crash reports with us if you've allowed that in your iPhone's settings.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect people from harm.
Deleting your data
- Delete any of your posts or comments from the app.
- Delete your whole account in the app: You tab, then Delete account. That removes your email, profile, posts, photos, comments, likes, reports and sign-ins right away. Copies in our database backups are gone within 7 days.
- Or email us and we'll do it for you.
Children
Here & Then isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them. If you think a child under 13 has an account, email us and we'll delete it.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update this page and its date. If a change matters for how your information is used, we'll also say so in the app.
